ICChE 2026 · Student Competitions

Beyond the technical sessions, the 8th International Conference on Chemical Engineering (17–19 December 2026), organized by the Department of Chemical Engineering, BUET, features four engaging competitions inspired by this year's theme, Smart ChemE for a Safer and Greener Earth. These competitions provide a platform for participants to showcase innovation, technical excellence, creativity, and sustainable solutions to real-world engineering challenges.

SC-01Design & build

ChemE-Car

Teams design, build, and safely control a small car powered entirely by a chemical reaction — no batteries, no motors bought off the shelf. On competition day the car must start, run, and stop as close as possible to a target distance while carrying a specified load, with the exact distance and load revealed only hours beforehand.

Team of up to 4 members

SC-02Analysis & strategy

ChemE-Case

Four-member teams take on a sustainability-themed engineering case, working against the clock to produce a written analysis that weighs technical soundness against real-world feasibility. The strongest submissions treat sustainability as a design constraint, not an afterthought.

Team of up to 4 members

SC-03Reinforcement learning

ChemE-Control

Two-person teams train a reinforcement-learning agent inside the PC-Gym process control environment to keep a simulated unit on setpoint under disturbance — the PC-Gym RL Control Challenge. Solutions are judged on tracking accuracy, how cleanly constraints are respected, and how much control effort it takes to get there.

SC-04Live trivia

ChemE-Jeopardy

A buzzer-based live trivia format — teams of up to four, three teams per game — spanning the breadth of chemical engineering. At least half of every game's categories are chemical-engineering-related, so no one gets through on general knowledge alone.

Team of up to 2 members
